آمِنًاAminanAyah 35 — "Make this land safe."
ذا أمن وسلامةSafe, secure, a place of peace

الأَمْنُ: طمأنينة النفس وزوال الخوف. قال تعالى: رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هذَا الْبَلَدَ آمِناً [إبراهيم/ ٣٥]. وقال في موضع آخر: رَبِّ اجْعَلْ هذا بَلَداً آمِناً [البقرة/ ١٢٦]. والفرق: في البقرة دعا أن يُجعل بلدًا، وفي إبراهيم دعا أن يُجعل آمنًا بعد أن صار بلدًا.

Al-amn is the tranquility of the soul and the removal of fear. Allah says: "My Lord, make this land aminan (safe)" [Ibrahim/35]. In another place: "My Lord, make this a safe land" [Al-Baqarah/126]. The difference: in Al-Baqarah, Ibrahim prayed for it to become a city; in Surah Ibrahim, he prayed for it to be made safe after it had already become a city.
الْأَصْنَامAl-AsnamAyah 35 — "Keep me and my sons away from worshiping idols."
تماثيل تُنحت وتُعبد من دون اللهCarved statues worshipped instead of Allah

الصَّنَمُ: ما يُنحت من حجر أو خشب على صورة ويُعبد. قال تعالى: وَاجْنُبْنِي وَبَنِيَّ أَنْ نَعْبُدَ الْأَصْنامَ [إبراهيم/ ٣٥]. وإبراهيم خليل الرحمن يستعيذ بالله من عبادة الأصنام، ففيه تنبيه أنّ أحدًا لا يأمن على نفسه الفتنة.

Al-sanam is what is carved from stone or wood into a form and worshipped. Allah says: "And keep me and my sons away from worshiping al-asnam (idols)" [Ibrahim/35]. Ibrahim, the intimate friend of the Most Merciful, seeks refuge in Allah from idol worship, alerting us that no one should feel safe from trials.
📝If Ibrahim (AS), who personally destroyed idols, still feared idol worship for himself and his children, how much more vigilant should we be about the subtle forms of shirk in our lives?
ذُرِّيَّةDhurriyyahAyah 37 — "I have settled of my offspring."
النسل والأولاد والأحفادOffspring, children, and descendants

الذُّرِّيَّةُ: النسل. قيل: من ذرأ الله الخلقَ. وقيل: من الذَّرّ وهو صغار النمل. قال تعالى: رَبَّنا إِنِّي أَسْكَنْتُ مِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي بِوادٍ غَيْرِ ذِي زَرْعٍ [إبراهيم/ ٣٧]. يعني إسماعيل وأمّه هاجر في مكّة.

Al-dhurriyyah means offspring and progeny. Allah says: "Our Lord, I have settled of my dhurriyyah (offspring) in a valley devoid of vegetation" [Ibrahim/37], referring to Isma'il and his mother Hajar in Makkah.
الْمُحَرَّمAl-MuharramAyah 37 — "Your House which has been made Inviolable."
المقدّس المحمي الذي حرّم الله انتهاكهMade sacred and inviolable; protected from violation

التَّحْرِيمُ: المنع البالغ. والمُحَرَّمُ: ما مُنع من انتهاكه. قال تعالى: عِنْدَ بَيْتِكَ الْمُحَرَّمِ [إبراهيم/ ٣٧]. والحَرَم: ما لا يحلّ انتهاكه. ومنه: الأشهر الحُرُم.

Al-tahrim is an absolute prohibition. Al-muharram is that which has been forbidden from violation. Allah says: "At Your House al-muharram (Inviolable)" [Ibrahim/37].
أَفْئِدَةAf'idahAyah 37 — "Make some people's hearts incline towards them."
القلوب في أشدّ حالات تأثّرها وتوقّدهاHearts at their most intense state of burning emotion

الفُؤَادُ: القلب من حيث التوقّد والتأثّر. سُمّي من الفأد وهو الشيّ. قال تعالى: فَاجْعَلْ أَفْئِدَةً مِنَ النَّاسِ تَهْوِي إِلَيْهِمْ [إبراهيم/ ٣٧]، أي: قلوبًا متوقّدة بالشوق تميل إليهم.

Al-fu'ad is the heart in its state of burning and being deeply affected. Named from al-fa'd (roasting). Allah says: "Make af'idah (burning hearts) of people tahwi (incline) toward them" [Ibrahim/37].
📝Ibrahim (AS) did not say "qulub" (hearts) but "af'idah" (burning hearts). He asked for hearts on fire with love for Makkah. This du'a is answered every year as millions rush to Hajj with burning hearts.
تَهْوِيTahwiAyah 37 — "Hearts incline towards them."
تميل وتسقط بسرعة نحو الشيء شوقًاTo fall toward with passionate longing

الهَوِيُّ: السقوط من علوّ إلى أسفل. قال تعالى: تَهْوِي إِلَيْهِمْ [إبراهيم/ ٣٧]، أي: تسقط إليهم سقوط المشتاق الذي لا يملك نفسه. فليست مجرّد ميل بل انجذاب شديد كسقوط حرّ.

Al-hawiyy is falling from high to low. Allah says: "tahwi (plunging) toward them" [Ibrahim/37]. It is not mere inclination but a powerful attraction like free-falling from the intensity of yearning.
وَهَبَWahabaAyah 39 — "Who has given me Ishmael and Isaac."
أعطى عطاءً بلا عوض ولا مقابلTo bestow as a pure gift with no return expected

الهِبَةُ: العطيّة الخالية عن الأعواض. قال تعالى: الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ الَّذِي وَهَبَ لِي عَلَى الْكِبَرِ إِسْماعِيلَ وَإِسْحاقَ [إبراهيم/ ٣٩]. والوَهَّاب: من أسماء الله لأنّه يهب بلا عوض.

Al-hibah is a gift free from any compensation. Allah says: "Praise be to Allah Who wahaba (gifted) me, in my old age, Isma'il and Ishaq" [Ibrahim/39]. Al-Wahhab is one of Allah's names because He gives without compensation.
مُقِيمَ الصَّلَاةِMuqim al-SalahAyah 40 — "Make me one who establishes the prayer."
المداوم على الصلاة بأركانها وخشوعهاOne who consistently performs prayer with devotion

إقامة الصلاة: أداؤها بحقوقها وشروطها وأركانها وخشوعها. قال تعالى: رَبِّ اجْعَلْنِي مُقِيمَ الصَّلاةِ وَمِنْ ذُرِّيَّتِي [إبراهيم/ ٤٠].

Iqamat al-salah means performing prayer fulfilling all its rights, conditions, pillars, and humility. Allah says: "My Lord, make me muqim al-salah and of my offspring" [Ibrahim/40].
📝Ibrahim said "min dhurriyyati" (of my offspring) not "wa dhurriyyati" (and my offspring). The use of "min" shows his realism: he knew not all descendants would be righteous, so he prayed for at least some of them.
تَقَبَّلْTaqabbalAyah 40 — "Accept my supplication."
اقبلْه قبولاً حسنًا برضاTo accept with pleasure and approval

التَّقَبُّلُ: القبول على وجه يقتضي ثوابًا ورضا. وهو أخصّ من القبول. قال تعالى: رَبَّنا تَقَبَّلْ مِنَّا [البقرة/ ١٢٧]، وقال: رَبَّنا وَتَقَبَّلْ دُعاءِ [إبراهيم/ ٤٠].

Al-taqabbul is acceptance that entails reward and pleasure. More specific than mere acceptance. Allah says: "Our Lord, taqabbal from us" [Al-Baqarah/127], and: "Our Lord, taqabbal my supplication" [Ibrahim/40].
الْحِسَابAl-HisabAyah 41 — "On the day when the reckoning takes place."
المحاسبة والعدّ يوم القيامةThe reckoning and judgment on the Last Day

الحِسَابُ: استعمال العدد. ومنه: المحاسبة. قال تعالى: يَوْمَ يَقُومُ الْحِسابُ [إبراهيم/ ٤١]. والحسيب: من أسماء الله تعالى لأنّه يحاسب عباده.

Al-hisab is counting and enumeration. Allah says: "On the day yaqum al-hisab (the reckoning takes place)" [Ibrahim/41]. Al-Hasib is one of Allah's names because He holds His servants accountable.
