Ar-RahmanAyah 1 — "The Most Merciful."
The One whose mercy encompasses all creation without exception

[Root: r-h-m]

Ar-Rahman is the One of encompassing mercy. It is more intensive than Ar-Rahim. Allah says: "Ar-Rahman" [Ar-Rahman/1]. This name is exclusive to Allah and cannot be applied to anyone else. The difference: Ar-Rahman indicates universal mercy covering believers and disbelievers in this world, while Ar-Rahim is specific to believers on the Day of Judgment.

Opening the Surah with this name alone, without a verb, indicates that Allah's very essence is the source of all mercy and every blessing.
📝The Surah is called "The Bride of the Qur'an." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Everything has a bride, and the bride of the Qur'an is Surah Ar-Rahman."
Al-BayanAyah 4 — "Taught him clear expression."
The faculty of articulate expression; the ability to convey what is within

[Root: b-y-n]

Al-bayan is the unveiling and manifesting of something. Allah says: "He taught him al-bayan (clear expression)" [Ar-Rahman/4]. Bayan includes speech, writing, and gesturing. It is among Allah's greatest blessings upon man, for through it he expresses what is within himself, communicates with others, and worships his Lord.

Allah mentioned teaching the Qur'an before creating man because the Qur'an is nobler, then mentioned bayan because it is the means to understand the Qur'an.
HusbanAyah 5 — "The sun and moon follow precise calculations."
Precise, exact calculation that never falters
[Root: h-s-b]

Al-husban is precise reckoning. Allah says: "The sun and the moon follow husban (precise calculations)" [Ar-Rahman/5], meaning: they run by exact calculation, never advancing nor falling behind. He also says: "He made the sun a radiance and the moon a light and determined for it phases so you may know the number of years and the reckoning" [Yunus/5].
Al-MizanAyah 7-9 — "He established the balance."
The balance; justice, equity, and fairness

[Root: w-z-n]

Al-mizan is the instrument of weighing. It is also used for justice. Allah says: "The heaven He raised and established the mizan (balance). That you may not transgress within the mizan. And establish weight in justice and do not make deficient the mizan" [Ar-Rahman/7-9].

The mizan is mentioned three times in three consecutive ayahs to emphasize the importance of justice: He established it, prohibited transgressing it, and commanded upholding it.
Ala'Ayah 13 — "Then which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?"
Favours, blessings, and divine bounties

[Root: '-l-w]

Al-ala' is the plural of ilan or alan, meaning favours and blessings. Allah says: "Then which of the ala' (favours) of your Lord will you deny?" [Ar-Rahman/13]. This ayah is repeated 31 times in the Surah, each time following the mention of one of Allah's blessings. It is a recurring reminder that everything is a blessing deserving gratitude.

The dual address "kumma" (you two) refers to both mankind and jinn together.
📝When the Prophet (peace be upon him) recited this Surah to the Companions, they were silent. He then recited it to the jinn, and every time he reached "Then which of the favours of your Lord will you deny?", they responded: "None of Your favours do we deny, our Lord!"
BarzakhAyah 20 — "Between them is a barrier."
A barrier between two things preventing them from mixing

[Root: b-r-z-kh]

Al-barzakh is a barrier between two things. Allah says: "Between them is a barzakh so neither of them transgresses" [Ar-Rahman/20], meaning: between the two seas is a barrier so neither overwhelms the other. He also says: "He placed between them a barzakh and a complete partition" [Al-Furqan/53].

Barzakh is also used for the realm between death and resurrection: the world of al-barzakh.
Al-Jalal wal-IkramAyah 27 — "Owner of Majesty and Honour."
Possessor of grandeur, majesty, generosity, and honour

[Root: j-l-l / k-r-m]

Al-jalal is grandeur and majesty. Al-ikram is bestowing favour and grace. Allah says: "There will remain the Face of your Lord, Owner of al-jalal wal-ikram (Majesty and Honour)" [Ar-Rahman/27]. Jalal relates to His essence (His majesty), while ikram relates to His actions (His generosity toward creation).

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Persist in saying 'Ya Dhal-Jalali wal-Ikram' (O Owner of Majesty and Honour)," meaning: repeat this supplication frequently.
Al-ThaqalanAyah 31 — "We will attend to you, O prominent beings."
The two weighty beings: mankind and jinn
[Root: th-q-l]

Al-thaqalan refers to mankind and jinn. They are called "the two weighty ones" because they are the weight upon the earth, its inhabitants and cultivators. Others say: because of their great status among creation due to being morally accountable. Allah says: "We will attend to you, O thaqalan (prominent beings)" [Ar-Rahman/31].
Al-IhsanAyah 60 — "Is the reward of excellence anything but excellence?"
Excellence; doing good at the highest, most beautiful level

[Root: h-s-n]

Al-ihsan is doing what is beautiful and good. It is above justice, because justice is to take what is yours and give what you owe, while ihsan is to give more than you owe and take less than you deserve. Allah says: "Is the reward of ihsan (excellence) anything but ihsan (excellence)?" [Ar-Rahman/60].

The Prophet (peace be upon him) defined ihsan: "To worship Allah as if you see Him, for even if you do not see Him, He sees you."
📝This is one of the most profound ayahs in the Qur'an. If you do good, Allah will repay you with good. The equation is simple yet carries infinite depth: your ihsan to Allah will be met with His ihsan to you, and His ihsan is beyond measure.
TabarakaAyah 78 — "Blessed is the name of your Lord."
Blessed and exalted; His goodness is abundant and eternal

[Root: b-r-k]

Tabaraka is from barakah (blessing). Barakah is the establishment of divine goodness in something. Allah says: "Tabaraka (Blessed) is the name of your Lord, Owner of Majesty and Honour" [Ar-Rahman/78]. Tabaraka is used exclusively for Allah, because permanent, enduring blessing comes from Him alone.

Closing the Surah with this word magnifies Allah after presenting His countless, uncountable blessings.
